Justice Shahid Kareem reportedly closed schools for an extended period of time beginning on January 2 and ending on January 8 after hearing petitions from concerned citizens about the current smog situation.

It is important to note that Lahore, along with the rest of Punjab, is currently enjoying a winter break from classes. The winter break for Lahore’s schools began on the 24th of December and was supposed to last until the 31st of January, with classes restarting on the 2nd of January.

A week ago, the LHC requested that the School Education Department (SED) consider doubling the length of winter break from one week to two weeks in light of the increasingly hazardous air quality in Lahore.

Given the current air quality, the Punjab government announced three weekly holidays for schools in Lahore earlier this month. As of now, the three days off per week schedule will continue.

SED has issued a notice stating that all Lahore schools, both public and private, will be closed every Friday and Saturday. The third holiday will be tallied based on the official Sunday holiday.
